Rear windshield wipers?

Why aren't they typically on cars with trunks yet they are on hatchbacks? I had a much worse visibility problem because of rain on the rear windshield of my sedans (with a rear windshield that is diagonal) than my hatchback that has a completely vertical rear windshield. Wouldn't it make more sense that rain would accumulate on something with more of a horizontal angle?

I've wondered the same thing. My only guess is that they figure the wind will clear up a diagonal windshield whereas it's hard to get enough airflow to clear up a vertical window.

I drive a wagon. I use my rear wiper most when the roads are wet, but it's not actually raining or snowing. I don't need to keep what's falling from the sky off the window, rather, whatever is coming up off the road. With a sedan, the trunk keeps the water and slush from splashing up on the rear window. :shrug-shoulders:

I think this is the exact reason.

On a side note, my Yukon XL was purchased when there was still the option of the clam shell (cargo) doors and I don't have rear-windshield wipers. This drives me NUTS! I cannot see a thing out of the back when I have all that stuff off the road.

PP are correct. The major issue is mud or road grime coming back up onto the window. Sedan don't have this issue, and it's generally assumed that the rain will flow down fast enough to be able to get decent visibility out the rear.
