OK i have two identical marathons, one is a 2005 model and the other a newer model. However the older one says it is only for use ffing for up to 48lbs and the newer one is 65lbs. So somewhere in between the weight limit on these seats changed yet the design is the same and the seats are the same size. Would you assume I could use the 48lb limit beyond that?? i think it had more to do with transport Canada than the actual seat cause the american seats were 65lbs at the time werent they??

Hi, :)

At one point Transport Canada defined a child as someone under 48lbs and as such our car seats were capped at that limit. Around 2006 (?) the definition of a child changed to 65lbs, hence your newer Marathon allowing for use up to 65lbs similar to it's American counterparts.

All that to say, it is not okay for you to use your 48lb seat past 48lbs. No one is sure if there were structural changes made to suddenly allow our Britax seats to pass up to 65lbs, and it would be illegal for you to use your seat past it's stated weight limit -- especially if your province has a proper use clause.

Keep in mind that very few children last in a Marathon to 65lbs anyway. A Marathon is outgrown when one of the following this happens:

The child reaches the maximum weight limit

OR

The child's shoulders are level with the top harness slots

OR

The tips of the child's ears are level with the top of the seat;

Whichever comes first.

Most children outgrow a Marathon because their shoulders are level with the top harness slots, and that happens loooooong before 65lbs is reached.

Hope that helps,

Thankyou, that does help. You just gave me permission to grab a new radian that I been coveting. My son is a big boy, he is 21 mos and weighs about 39 lbs now. He is forward facing as his seat says 33 lbs for rearfacing limit. My previous son did infact outgrow it in height before weight but they are two totally differnet builds and I suspect my youngest will need a bigger seat that will hold him longer by weight being as him and my 5 almost 6 year old are almost the same weights LOL.

Oh my! Yes, if you can manage a new seat that can rear face your little one for a while longer that would be excellent. :thumbsup: Thank goodness for all these higher weight rear facing convertibles coming onto our market. :)
