Center position

If the center rear position is supposedly the safest, why don't car manufacturers put LATCH anchors on the center position? Usually it is just for the "Outboard" seats.

Just my opinion, but I think it is because they are only "required" to provide 2 sets, so that's what most of them do.

In some cases I think previous poster is right, costs are the reason. In other cases I think it's because the anchors need to be spaced a certain distance apart to perform correctly in a crash, and some vehicles are not wide enough to allow proper spacing for three sets of lower anchors.

That's interesting because in Australia most come ONLY with one in the middle and I've been told that the OUTSIDE is safer!!!!

The center most position is the furthest away from crash forces ... but the safest place to install the carseat is whichever location provides the most secure install (less than 1" movement at the belt path) -- it's generally easy & safe to install carseats in the center with seatbelt alone: if you have difficulty doing so, check the manual & contact your local CPST.

Mostly because most families would benefit more from having them in the outboard position, and because some cars are not big enough to put a set in the middle. And remember that if there are three sets, then it must pass testing with ALL THREE sets used at the maximum weight simultaneously.

I don't think this one necessarily has to do *only* with money. I suspect money plays a part, but I don't think it's the only reason. Some back seats just plain aren't big enough for three sets.
