Recycled Car Seats Heading to Portland
Thanks to a great partnership with AAA and FedEx, the Safe Kids Spokane Child Passenger Safety Team, lead by the Spokane Regional Health District, has gone green. We have been accepting car seats for recycling at our car seat checks over that past year and now the first shipment of the soon-to-be recycled seats will be picked up by FedEx today. AAA has stored the seats we've been collecting at their downtown office.
On Monday, a team of dedicated volunteers stripped the seats down to the plastic. The closest recycler that will accept the type of plastic used in car seats is in Portland. Today, FedEx will be at the AAA offices, 1717 W. 4th, at noon to pick up four huge boxes to take to Portland and they've agreed to transport the recycled seats for free.
The Safe Kids Spokane Coalition is only the second coalition in Washington state to recycle seats, with only a handful of coalitions in the nation participating. If you have an expired or unsafe seat, please feel free to bring it to any one of our car seats checks or the fitting stations at AAA downtown and Liberty Lake Police Department.
