How close to weight limit can you go?

My ds is currently in an old Triumph. He has probably 1/2-3/4 in left between his shoulder and slots. He's about 38 lbs clothed but not shoed. How close can he get? We're going to start the process of getting a special needs seat approved by ins, but not sure how long that will take.

Right up to the limit, clothed and shoed.

Is there a a reason you are pursuing a SN seat now? There are conventional seats available that will harness him for quite a bit longer, unless he has a need for additional positioning aids or something at this time.

The suggestion I got here was to look into the Merritt Roosevelt b/c it's probably the best bet to keep him harnessed the longest. And I only have tether anchors in my 3rd row, and the Regent probably wouldn't fit next to the Nautilus back there. The Roosevelt, I believe, can tether to the seatbelt when using the long belt path.
