Kelty Kangaroo, any thoughts?

Hi all,

Has anyone ever used a Kelty Kangaroo? It is looking very interesting to me but I have read mixed reviews. As I walk a lot and DH and I go camping, it would be wonderful to have a child carrier for long journeys. I had thought about a Baby Bjorn but I just don't think that it would offer the support over a long trip and although a backpack might be nice, I don't think it would make me very comfortable. I like the features of the Kelty Kangaroo such as the waist belt and the way it reast on the body, but I had read a review that said if your hips are wider that your waist, which mine absolutely are, the waist strap slips up and all the weight redistributes to the shoulders causing discomfort. That is was fine for the first little bit, but once your child reached 12-13 lbs. it was uncomfortable. I wondered if anyone had used one what you thought of it.

I haven't used the Kelty but I have the LL Bean one and now the Evenflo Trailbazer. We love them! My DS is 22+# now and DH is out of shape ;) He can hike easily with him on his back. I can to , if you adjust it correctly the weight is distributed on your hips vs shoulders. The child needs to be about 6m or able to sit up. Our Chiro is in favor of these but he has no issue w/ the Bjorn either so I'm not sure his ok means much :)

We had a Kelty Kangaroo when our dd was little. We did not like it (and we knew how to use it properly). My husband and I are tall, 5'9" and 6'2". I don't think this carrier works well for tall, long-torsoed people. The straps to adjust the hip belt and the snugness of the child to your body are the same...so when you pull the child in snugly (as we wanted ours to be), the hip belt would pull up and slip off our hips onto our bellies (and we are thin). This resulted in much discomfort for our bellies and shoulders. I wouldn't recommend this for anyone built like us. Perhaps it works better for shorter folks. As a result, we sought out a carrier that was nothing (style-wise) like the Kangaroo. So, for our son we purchased a kozycarrier www.kozycarrier.homestead.com/ and we loved it. The front carry seems a bit uncomfortable for an infant, but my son liked it. We still use it for a back carrier, but prefer our Kelty BackCountry (now the Journey, I think) for kids over 5/6 mos.

I gave my sister a Kelty Kangaroo and a Baby Bjorn. I know she used the Bjorn far more than the Kelty. I think it was more comfortable.
