Cracked EPS foam in booster

I have a 2007 Fisher Price booster. I had to take it apart to clean up vomit (fun!) and noticed that the foam all the way up the back is cracked. Can it be taped together or is the back now worthless? Also, when is it safe to go without the back on a booster? My oldest is almost 10 but is only around 55 lbs. He rides in one of our FPSV boosters. My middle son is 7 and around 50 lbs. They are both 49 inches tall. I'm guessing it's fine for them to be backless, and maybe even more comfortable. We have a 2006 Sienna so there are headrests in all positions. My youngest is a wild child and sits in a regent, no booster for him yet :)

My other question is when do boosters expire? We have an Evenflo booster and the date was April of 05. Does it expire in April or to have more time? Looks like we may go shopping soon.

Thanks for any help!

Hi Becca. Yeah, I'd just put some tape on the foam and call it a day.

The back isn't that tall on that particular booster, so if either boy hasn't outgrown it yet, they must be fairly short-torsoed. I'd be more than OK with the 10 yr old going backless, but I'd probably keep the 7 yr old with the back on the booster. It's OK for him to go backless, but I think the back helps remind the younger group that they need to stay upright.

Boosters expire just like carseats do and it depends on manufacturers. Evenflo is around 6 years, if I remember correctly. Check for a label on the seat.

Thanks Heather,

They both must have very short torsos. They are pretty tiny! My middle one actually will be 8 in just a few weeks but we'll give him a little while longer. I'm glad to know I can keep using the back on the one. The FP ones are my favorite boosters- good head support when sleeping and very narrow so they fit just about everywhere, so I'd hate to not be able to use one of them!
