AEO for a Newborn?

I have a friend on a very, very tight budget looking for a solution for the impending birth of her 2nd baby. DC #1 is 2.5 and large. She is currently harnessed in a AEO which they are very pleased with as a seat overall. She is 35lbs and I know taller than my son who has easily outgrown our Roundabout by height so I 'm not even sure that she is properly fitting into the AEO.

So thankfully, she is buying a used Regent from a friend that is only 2yrs old for DC1.

She was planning to purchase my Keyfit 22, but I'm thinking that financially she should just use her AEO for the newborn. DC1 was 10lbs , 22" at birth. She will be having a homebirth so baby will be full term and should be good size if all goes as planned.

Am I overlooking any obvious reasons as to why the AEO couldn't be used other than for convenience factors?

Provided the baby's torso is long enough the AOE (Alpha Omega Elite) is a great rear facing seat. The angle is a pain to get right for a newborn, but a few noodles should do it.

Here's a picture of a 36 weeker in an AOE. The straps look like they go up by his ears, but they weren't that high. They were about an inch over his shoulders. We were able to get them tight on him, so I told the parents to call Dorel and see what their stance on newborns in the AOE and the straps too high were. They didn't tell me what Dorel said, so I can't pass that info along to you.

Like Wendy says, as long as the baby fits the harness, it would be fine, but I don't think most newborns will have THAT long of a torso - especially since the harness is supposed to be at or BELOW the shoulders.

A Scenera, on the other hand, would be an economical seat and would most likely fit all but the smallest baby.

I would not do the AOE for a newborn. I had a two week old baby (average size) come through a seat check with both parents' cars... with mom he was in an infant seat that fit perfectly... in dad's car he was in an AOE and he was way way way too small for it. The strap slots were up by his ears. Both myself and the instructor who signs off on our checks recommended they not use it for a few months.

The scenera though, like someone else mentioned, does fit newborns well. Not sure on the Avenue and the Uptown but they are other inexpensive options

I used an AOE for ds2 a couple days after he was born and he fit fine. Personally I'd rather have an AOE with some padding then a scenera where the straps are still too high but there's no inserts but that's just me:twocents:
