Who is safer?

This question has crossed my mind a couple times, thankfully we haven't ran into it yet but I should know what to expect if it happens.

In my car (2010 Camaro) would it be safer to RF the baby in the front, or DD ride in her booster in the front?

Air bags are always off unless the weight requirement is met, but that doesn't mean they would stay off necessarily. Malfunction scares me!

Unless your airbags can be turned off with a key (NOT a sensor) you should never put a rear facing car seat in the front seat. If you have to put one child in the front you should put the booster there with the seat back (away from the airbag) as far as it can go.

:yeahthat:

Your vehicle manual probably prohibits it, too. Likely stickers on the visor as well. Airbags with sensors should always be considered active.

Thank you! I was weary about the car being in control of the airbag :(

Booster in the front, totally. No key scares me.

Thanks! Scares me also. I didn't know some could be turned off with a key. Is that just older cars or do newer cars do that also?

I wonder if the weight/force of the installed carseat would be enough to make the sensor think a full sized person is sitting there and the airbag would go back on....?

Usually it's cars/trucks with no back seat. A few other types of vehicles also have this option but it's not super common.

Never put a rear-facing seat in front of an air bag unless it can be totally deactivated. Like the others said, you can't trust the sensor to always accurately decide when it should or shouldn't go off. Hopefully with the sensor it won't go off with your booster-rider in the front seat either, but at least if it does it probably won't decapitate her.

After baby is a year old and over 20 lbs, if you absolutely had to put the baby in the front seat it would need to be forward facing, but of course it would be much much much better to keep the child rear-facing in the back seat as long as possible instead.
