transporting dogs safely

Hi. I know this question was blogged about and asked by others in the past- but it's been 10 years, so I am sure there are new products and info around. I was around long, long ago as bigteamug, but am having issues logging in to ask. My kidlets are now 22 and 17, so we have different car safety concerns than child car seats. ;)

I need recommendations to keep our dog in place in the car when we take road trips or travel around town, to keep her and all of us safer. Ideally, it would be a harness that would allow her to choose between sitting and laying on the seat. She is a nervous girl and likes to lay on the floor when scared - we'll work to train her out of that for the harness to work. Bonus points if we can use the same harness for getting out at rest stops - she slips a collar too easily when scared, even a martingale collar.

She's between 45 and 50 pounds, and is a chesty hair-coated labradoodle rescue. A crate is not a good option for us given our cars and her nervous nature- cars are an '04 Corolla and a '22 ID4 (we take the Corolla on road trips).

Thank you for any suggestions! When we were in the car seat years, I loved the community here and so appreciated all the help in keeping my little ones safe on the road.
