Carpooled a kid last week. First time he climbed in, he promptly buckled up and put the shoulder belt under his arm. He didn't argue when I asked him to make sure it was on his shoulder and remembered what to do on the way home.
A couple of days later he rode with us again, and again I had to ask him to make sure it was on his shoulder.
So the next morning on our way to pick him up, DS (7) who is all about the rules, said he'd tell him when we got in the put it on his shoulder. I explained how he could politely remind him if he didn't remember on his own, but told him not to say anything right away and give the kid a chance to remember. On the drive there, we talked about why it was not safe to ride that way.
As soon as kid climbed into the van, DD2 (3) started telling him that he has to keep the seatbelt on his shoulder and telling him all the ways he could get hurt in an accident if he didn't. I didn't have to remind him anymore, lol.
I didn't know she was listening, but she got it!
