Tall, Harnessed Seat?

Hello all,

I'm a former CPST and forum member who has been away for a long while. I'm also an Early Childhood Special Education Teacher. I was working with a family recently who is struggling. They have a 4-year-old with Down Syndrome who they moved to a high-back booster because mom reports she outgrew the harness in her current seat. Mom wasn't sure how much she weighed or how tall she was, but eye-balling her, she's probably about 3' tall and under 50#. The family also has a newborn and a rear-facing toddler. Their current vehicle is a large SUV with a third row. The younger two are outboard in the center row because it the only row accessible from the back doors. The four-year-old is in the third row and she climbs in through the back. She can't be seated with her siblings because she will hurt them. She is not staying in her seat and her mom is at a loss. What are current, tall (so as to last as long as possible), harnessed seat options? This family looks to be one for whom finances might be tight. Mom also talked about possibly trying to sell this vehicle for something with better gas mileage, so we can't rule out a need for 3-across seat. We're also giving mom ideas for addressing the behavior, but this kid needs to be back in a harnessed seat. Mom has been given the names of local CPSTs with Safe Travel for All training as well.

Thanks in advance for helping us out with information about current seats.

The tallest seat that's reasonably narrow is the Chicco MyFit.

The cheapest tall seat is the Evenflo SureRide (which is off the retail market but available as a program seat and you can buy and have shipped for free if you call the Children's Hospital Colorado Safety Store.)

That said- you may want to recommend working with medical personnel on a large medical seat covered by insurance if this will be a long term need, because no conventional seat goes over 65 lbs any more.
