RSTV - which version for rental car?

A little background. We've a few upcoming trip : Hawaii, Asia, Cancun. DC will turn 3 by these trip, currently 30lb. We don't own a car at home, so DC is not used to sitting in a car seat. We did it once in a rental car and he screamed the entire way. So renting a car seat is not appealing to us.

But which version of RideSafer vest should I get? V2 is for "lap-belts, tether anchor, and lap-shoulder belts in the back seats". V3 is for "has only lap-shoulder belts in the back seats". What Compact rental cars usually have? Should I get V2 just in case?

You need a top tether with a lap belt.only. You likely will not find a top tether in either Mexico or Asia. Also, I don't think the vest would fit a 30lb kid. It BARELY fit mine at 35 lbs, 3.5 years old. I would bring a car seat.

Has your son really never been in a car but that one trip? Even at grandparents houses or on trips or visiting friends? That is AMAZING! I lived in NYC until my son was 5.5, so I totally understand the city but we escaped it lots :)

You will likely want to look at the Evenflo Sureride or Maestro. They are both light and easy to install. I travel internationally with a Maestro frequently. I attach a gym bag strap to the LATCH storage hooks and sling it over my shoulder. You will need to practice with a locking clip though as locking seatbelts are rare outside the US.

Not sure why no one else answered your question, but I travel a lot and have used all of the seats mentioned plus an RSTV, so feel free to pm me if you have questions.
