Plane Flight to LA with 11-month-old

I'm flying to LA from the East Coast with my 11-month-old and can't decide what to do about our car seat. She's not a big fan of car seats but when we flew with her last time it felt really unsafe to just hold her. I'm okay with buying an extra seat.

We have a Britax Marathon that she tolerates, a Graco Snugride that she's almost too big for, and a Cosco Scenera that we haven't installed yet.

Since it's just me and her, I'm not sure I can safely haul the Marathon and her around the airport. I'm tempted to take the Cosco Scenera but it doesn't seem all that padded. We have a car seat that she can use in LA that my mom borrowed from a friend so it's not essential to bring one.

Give an this, which seat, if any, should I bring?

TIA!

You should definitely buy her a ticket and bring a seat. She'll be safer, everyone around her will be safer, and the seat will be in your sight and not thrown around or lost.

I'd do the Scenera, if you're comfortable with it. It's bare bones but light. I don't think the lack of padding is a big deal, especially on a trip.

Are you planning on bringing a rolling carryon? If so, I'd use the Travelling Toddler. It's compatible with the Marathon or the Scenera. I've used it and loved it.

If not, you could get a cheapy luggage cart, and hook it to that. :)

Having flown with and sat beside all of those, I'd bring the Scenera. I traveled with the Marathon by myself, attached to a small rolling luggage cart, and it was just a pain in the butt.

We'll be doing the same flight come September, but we'll be continuing from LA to Guam so I can understand the need for comfort. The Scenera's not crazy padded but I think you'll be just fine. If I didn't already have a Coccoro, I'd purchase a Scenera since my other current option is a Marathon. ;)

Thanks for the great advice!

I'm going to buy her a ticket and bring the Scenera. I was planning on checking our bag so I think I'll get a cheap luggage cart.

Should I try and install the Scenera rear facing on the plane as well or is it okay to face forward?

I would do the Scenera because it is so lightweight and installs easily on planes. The only time I would think twice about bringing the Scenera is if the car I was installing in didn't have LATCH or locking seatbelts, cause I don't want to deal with the locking clip.

Definitely rear-facing. Not only because it's the law, but because you'll have way more shoulder room, it will be easier to communicate and play with her, and she'll be more comfortable with more recline than forward-facing. :)
