Next step on a budget...ASAP

The time has come... our Radian expires next month. :(

At the end of this month we are moving and flying cross-country. I'm going solo with 3 kids and would prefer not to take 2 seats with me, so I'm looking at ordering something to have shipped to our destination waiting for us. (DH and my family will be there already.)

DS will be 6 in September. He'll be harnessed in my car in an R100 until he outgrows it. I'm guessing around 6.5. He's even with the top slots in his Radian but has a bit more room in the R100. We need a seat for him for our second car. I'd be OK getting JUST a booster for him for our second car (since he rides in it once a week), but knowing that this may be his primary seat for a few days until our van with the R100 in it arrives at our destination, I can't do that. I don't think he's ready for a booster FT even if it's for a few days.

He's 46 pounds and tall and lanky... our house is packed and I can't find measuring tape for torso height. LOL But maybe the reference of where he's at in relation to the R100 top slots helps? I thought about a Nautilus to harness him longer but I'm not sure how much more time that would buy me? And we're on a "we need to do this as affordably as possible" budget, and DH is scoffing at the price of a Nautilus.

We could also consider a seat that fits him now but could be passed down to the baby as baby's second seat once we move him (DS1) into a dedicated booster. But again, on a budget. HELP?! I need to decide within the next few days...

I am thinking $100 or less since DH wasn't up for the $120 sale price on a Nautilus.

And I just realized a seat to pass down to the baby isn't an option because he has a seat and will also get the R100 once outgrown.

What about just shipping your r100 to your new location and use the radian for a few days before your flight and just toss it at the airport? Then you can grab a booster for training purposes for the secondary vehicle since the r100 will be available for full time riding upon arrival?

I never thought of that! Or ship the NextFit and use the R100 on the plane for the littler one, since I know the NextFit is wide for airplane seats. We are doing this entire move via shipping so one more box shouldn't be an issue!

Okay so DH wanted to check a seat at the airport and I was like NO WAY. Then I brought up shipping one... and now he wants to know, wouldn't they both be handled the same way? Could we check a seat in a box with padding just as we were shipping it? (We have 2 free bags per person)

Here's the difference: the shipper is in the business of getting things there safely. The airline is in the business of getting PEOPLE there safely and carries their things basically as a courtesy. When you ship with a shipper you get a guarantee if they damage Your item. When you fly you sign a waiver when you buy a ticket absolving them of responsibility if they break your stuff.

If they lose or damage a seat, you MIGHT get them to cover it as a courtesy but it may take considerable time and effort and they might not.

If you check a seat, a sturdy well-fitted well padded box is the way to go. But I've been separated from gate-checked items more than once. I just wouldn't count on it.
