Long flights for small school aged kids - boosters?

Wendy posted up this FAA document in another thread and it got me thinking: http://www.faa.gov/passengers/fly_children/crs/

It states: While booster seats and harness vests enhance safety in vehicles, FAA prohibits passengers from bringing these types of restraints on airplanes for use during taxi, take-off and landing. These restraints should be checked as baggage.

Does this mean you could technically use a booster during the flight, but just not during take off, landing and taxi? I'm particularly interested in using the booster as a place for the kids to lean for sleep support during a 14 hr flight, so even just the back portion would maybe work if the seat portion would raise them up too high to be safe with the plane lapbelt.

Thoughts? Even if technically allowed, I could see it ruffling feathers with the flight crew. . .

My kids are very small for their ages, and I estimate that at time of travel will be 42 lbs 47in 7yo, 48lbs 49in 9yo.

Yes, technically boosters could be used during the cruising portions of flights, but airlines are allowed to make their own rules about them. Just because they aren't prohibited doesn't mean they're necessarily allowed.

Yes, you are totally right, and with two different airlines and three flight crews before we get to our destination, it's probably best not to risk it. Maybe pillows will work just as well. We also have CARES harnesses that we used last time. Both are too tall for it, according to guidelines but I'll bet they'll still fit, especially the 7yo.

the RSTV people are reportedly working on a cam-wrap type adaptation for planes for one of their vests. That would be potentially helpful for sleeping on long rides, like CARES.
