How to go about observing bus harnessing?

My 4 year old son is going to start special ed preschool on Tuesday. He will ride the bus. The bus will come to my house, where I walk him to the bus, but then the para (I think) takes over and harnesses my son. (Or maybe it was an aid?) Then he goes off to preschool. When it's over, they will harness him again to take him home. I'm nervous because I know in the regular vehicles, kids are often not properly harnessed. Should I call the bus driver to see if I can meet sometime to observe buckling my son? Just wait and try to be quick on Tuesday? I think a trial would be good for my son anyway. Please advise!

Call either your school district's person in charge of transportation, or the school's person in charge of transportation. Say that you need to make sure he fits properly in the provided harness, and ask for a time when you can arrange for them to try him in it. At that time you can ask about how the person who will harness him is trained, etc.

I'd just get on the bus with him. More than once. Go in the middle of the year occasionally too so they're not expecting it. Just watch what they do. If the person buckling him doesn't do it right start by teaching her.

Atleast once a week, I follow my son onto the bus and if necessary, correct mistakes. I do it at random, so no set day, but they normally do a pretty good job.

I must have totally misread. I thought you were most concerned about fit. I should sleep more. ;)

As far as checking day to day use, I agree, just do it, at unexpected times.

I called the bus driver this morning and left a message. I was told that she's super duper nice and will get back to me right away, blah, blah. I'll call again tomorrow.
