Fixed Headrest Issues

So I've got a rental car right now, it's a 2016 Chevy Equinox. It has fixed headrests in the back & they're causing problems with the install of our Frontier. The Frontier is the only harnessed seat my son fits in. Is there any way to safely put my son in this car? He's too big to RF (55lbs) and too young for a NBB (4.5yrs old).

The vehicle manual I found online says the headrests are not removable but I did find a few things that said to insert a pin/paperclip in the holes on the side of the base of the headrest to remove. Is this safe?

No, I tried that. I have a Sureride RF outboard and the Frontier won't fit.

Who is in the Sureride? Do you have an alternate car seat for that kid?

The 4 year old could probably FF in the Sureride, and it would probably fit under the fixed headrests.

DS doesn't fit in the Sureride, he's on the top slot and the harness is too snug. The Frontier is literally the only seat he fits in.

I would take the vehicle back to the rental place with your seats and ask to swap to something that fits your seats. I have done that before. They "upgraded" me, no charge, to a minivan. That I hated driving, was super ugly and had terrible visibility but my seats fit.
