field trip to encourage importnace to kids?

My friend has expressed interest in finding a field trip where her son can see why he needs to stay in his seatbelt. We are in California. He is 8yo so we are talking booster or just belt (not sure which eh uses anymore.) He is special needs so just telling him has not been enough for him to get it. I think having an authority tell him or even getting t o see a simulated crash would really help him understand. Does the NHTSA or CHP do this sort of thing? Or is there somewhere we can go?

Probably no help, b/c it was so long ago, but when I was in elementary school, way too long ago, they had someone come in (no idea from where), but there was a crash dummy on a sled that of course had no seat belt. It jolted to a stop and the dummy went flying. Impacted me enough that I remember it and complained to my parents, since we didn't have seat belts in the back seat of our car. Yes, I'm that old, and dad was a mechanic so we also had old cars. LOL

Honestly the first thing that came to mind for me (and I'm not really sure if this would even be feasible) would be to see a person who has been severely and permanently injured due to lack of a seatbelt. Maybe ask around to emergency doctors in the area and see if they know of anyone who was injured in a car accident and is willing to talk to kids?

Sorry, this is so timely for me. I had an incident with DD2 getting out of her harness at a gas station tonight. As luck would have it, cop pulled in behind me. I asked him if he would tell her to stay in her seat, which he did (nicely). I don't think she will do that again. Cried all the way home

Glad all was well, I'd have asked him to do it, not so nicely! LOL

When my ODS pulled that unbuckle stunt, I put one of his stuffed toys on the console and drove down the street w/ it there until I needed to slam on my brakes. Of course it went flying into the front seat. Then, I just looked at him and asked if he thought that would have hurt HIM and let him figure out the rest. He didn't do it again. Lucky for me, YDS doesn't know how to do his straps up, as I'm not sure that would work for him as easily (think he'd think it was funny actually), so I don't have to worry about it...Scares me that extra special kind of way that one of our *own* might get in a CSR crash! Sometimes you can only do so much...
