In Search Of Early '70s Strolee Classic Car Seat

Would look pretty much like this one from the 1971 Montgomery Wards catalog:

1971CarSeat.jpg

This exact one would be great to find, but the one I really have my heart set on finding is a step up from this one. A step up because it had both upright and reclining positions and the seat and backrest pads were contoured instead of being flat on top. The center of the seat and back has simulated horizontal pleating, vacuum formed into the vinyl. Reminds me of my beloved 1969 Z28 Camaro upholstery from many years ago.

Any color would do. I remember doing car snooping back in the day and seeing this seat model in black, brown, gold, and even white vinyl. Light pitting in the chrome frame is OK, but I'd like the upholstery to be in G to VG condition with no splits or tears in the vinyl. Please keep an eye out for me if you frequent moving/garage/yard sales, or flea markets.

Perhaps some of you or your siblings had this seat to use back then and it's still stashed away in attic, garage, basement, or storage shed. At least if your parents hang onto nearly everything and just store it away, like I did with our children's crib, stroller, and highchair.;) I'd certainly appreciate anyone checking to see if their folks might still have it. If you could possibly send a photo of the seat it would be great, so that I can verify it's the exact one I want to purchase.

I'm willing to offer a fair price plus pay for all shipping. Anyone here who knows me from the StrollerSwap board would without a doubt vouch that I'm a trustworthy person of integrity, especially when buying or selling with another member, and I never back out of a transaction once I commit to buy or sell.

Thanks in advance for your help! I figure if anyone can locate this classic seat for me, you'd all be the ones to do it. Enjoying my association with this terrific group very much! :)

Hey there, Mel! Thank you for the kind vouch.:) And Mel is VERY knowledgable on the topic of strollers. Mel, your site page on classic Maclaren plaids is a great source of info on the UK-made Macs, and I, for one, refer to it often!

I had one similar to that in 1978! (bought used at a yard sale  )

Yep, definitely in the same era! Thanks for posting the link. :) It's interesting, I don't remember seeing one of these classic seats in blue vinyl before, or maybe it's because I saw so many in black or tan and that's what sticks in my mind the most?

Dave-
I have a Strolee Wee Care car seat dated may 1982. It is bronze vinyl pad, and can either sit high or low, upright or recline. It is pretty much the same design as the ones from the 70's.

Hi,

Thanks for responding! That must have also been your PM I just read. Is this the one you have?

That's a beautiful one for a collector, but I really want to find the Strolee from about 10 years earlier as pictured in my OP, from the pre-plastic shell era. With space at a premium due to collecting strollers and prams, I only have room for one, maybe two vintage seats. The pleated upholstery pattern in the vinyl on those early '70s models made them look like small sports car seats of the time which is why I'm in search of that particular one. I sure hope a collector interested in '80s car seats quickly grabs up the nice one you have. If you ever happen to come across one like I've pictured, in VG condition like yours, I'd definitely be interested in purchasing it. Thanks again, for bringing your car seat to my attention!:)

Glad you found it- that's it. I'm new to this and couldn't figure how to load the picture. I love car seats from the early 1980's!

That 82 Strolee has a 5-point harness that feeds through a loop on the shield. Very interesting if you look close at it.

Vintage, and 1982 don't belong in the same sentence. :duck:

I'm NOT vintage at 27, thankyouverymuch :p

LOL OK, I know how you feel. I see people list supposedly "antique" Taylor-Tot stollers that are from the early 1950s. Ahem...I rode in one of those so-called "antiques" when I was a toddler back then and don't consider myself an antique. Not yet, that is...;):D

Hi,

I am finally back! Thanks for the links and responding to my ISO. :) You have a pretty nice classic seat, but it's still a bit newer than the one I'm looking for. The one in the image is before the plastic shell models and right after the "hook over" models of the '50s/'60s that attached to the car's front seat back. The chrome steel chassis is very similar in design and works like the earlier Strolee. Actually, I first thought the one on the catalog page was a Wards brand car seat, but looking closely at the name on the crotch strap below the front bar I can see the elongated "V" which was part of Strolee's trademark emblem. If you spot one of these older early '70s seats please give me a shout! Thanks again for responding!:)

Kind of cool post. I was looking to find out what type of car seat my mom had for me when I was a baby in 1977 and for my brother in 1980. Just by looking at the photos I am pretty sure it could've been a Strolee. My mom would die if she knew people were selling these for $50 on Ebay. Does anyone have some photos of mid 70s Strolees besides the ones that have already been posted?

Go to ClassicSeats' profile and there are albums there with pics of seats and catalog scans

Golly. 29.5" - 48", 18lbs-50lb. My 8 year old would be just about outgrowing it now! And it was allowed on rear-facing vehicle seats (but not side-facing).
