Do I keep the padding in the complete air?

There is a little piece with 2 side cushions that goes behind her back. I looked through the manual and couldn't find anything about when, if ever it should be removed. Dd is 27 months and rear facing. She weighs 24 pounds with clothes on.

it's totally optional... you can remove it if you want

I took mine out at about that weight with DD. Only problem is not sure where it is now

My DD is 14 months and about 23ishlbs. I removed ours a little while ago. I found that as she got to be about 22lbs when I'd sit her in the seat, the padding piece always found its way UNDER her bum as opposed to just behind her back. That's when I took it out.

I lost mine a loooong time ago my problem was since it doesn't secure to the seat it was falling out all the time. I kept dropping it in parking lots when I took my kids out and it got really gross.
