is this a big no-no or is it safe to use since it's made by a car seat manufacturer? only safe with Diono seats & no other brand? not safe at all? TIA!

Safe with Diono only, but I would not use it at all. Better to learn to use the seat correctly without it.

Diono says it's safe with their seats, but it's been known to break and cut seatbelts, so I wouldn't use it.

I wouldn't do it because Diono doesn't make the SEATBELT that it's modifying. No vehicle manufacturer says it's okay to attach a ratchet to their belt. Overtightening a seatbelt can damage the belt and make it more prone to failure.

If you're having trouble installing according to the car seat & vehicle instruction manuals, post a new thread here and we'll help you out!!

After a costly seat belt replacement I would advise you to never use one. I am just a mom who used one before finding this site and it totally destroyed the retractor in dh's car. I wish I'd known better.

if ratcheting the belt is not safe why do we see infant seat bases with ratchets now? Summer infant Prodigy comes to mind. just curious

I used a mighty tite years ago with ds's seat (before I knew much about car seat safety). It helped me get his seat really tight, so I thought it was a good thing. Of course at the time I didn't even know there were CPSTs, so I figured I was on my own, and this helped me get a good install (or what I thought was a good install, I'd love to go back now and see my work, I'm sure it was scary)

Yes, summer makes a seat. But if you do a search for thread here on the seat, you will find concern as well. But on the mighty rite, we have real world reasons. We have seen them cut belts, we have seen them damage belts. Why would you want to also pay $150 to fix your seat belt later, you know?

Haha, actually, at Kim conference, I had the seat belt in a little wrong and I damaged the belt with the summer seat.

I used this and was horrified when I found out how dangerous they were. And it was not even from her. My cousin had a seat check and the CPST told her about the damage they can do and told me and I removed them.

Now that I know more, It makes perfect sense how unsafe this is.

that's scary. I imagine the ratchet is a draw for a lot of people, if you don't know better then you don't think about it. You know, we're told seats are safe, so you take the manufacturer at its word. Just like AOE's , we're told they're the only seat you need, so if you don't know better, you believe them

I used this after a rec from a fireman and neither of my kids car seats are working now. The retractor on both latches is broken, both sides. Any idea if Diono will replace them? I'm so angry right now I could spit nails.

I used one for 8 years in my truck with no problem. I still have the truck 20 years later and have not had any issues with the seat belts. Am I lucky or maybe I installed it correctly.

You weren't in a crash to potentially experience catastrophic failure of the belt either, I gather.

I don't know what your purpose is in digging up a 10 year old thread to comment on a discontinued product, but the manufacturer no longer makes them, no manufacturer of car seats allows them to be used, and they're potentially dangerous, so I am going to lock this thread.
