Chest clip question?

Why does the US have the chest clip on the car seat while the European seats don't have it? Are there any other differences in how the car seats are made? Is there a safety reason for having it or not having it?

Europe requires a one step release from a car seat in case of emergency. Their harnesses usually have pads that are designed to help keep the harness in place and the placement of the straps also helps.

The US does not require a chest clip int eh regulations but consumers seem to want them and it is an easy way to keep the straps in the right place. Since manufacturers require them for use, if one comes on your seat, it must be used.

At least this is how I take what I've heard over the years.
