Baby Frame Carrier for Hiking

DS is 7.5 months, about 20 pounds, and super-tall (haven't measured him lately, but 95th percentile for height at last measure). So, we want a frame carrier so that either DH or I could carry him when we go hiking. We don't do very rough terrain, but the trails can get a little steep. I'm torn between the Deuter Kid Comfort III and the Kelty 3.0.

We tried on a Deuter Kid Comfort II at the store and DH and I both loved the fit on us. I'd get the III for the integrated sun hood and higher backrest though.

I have not tried on a Kelty, but the one thing that has me considering it is that I read in an online review that it has something built into the frame that keeps it from collapsing around the child should you accidentally fall backward. I can't find anything on their website that mentions this though, and even googling it I don't come up with anything. Anyone know anything about that? I think that would really sway me towards the Kelty.

So would you go with the Deuter or Kelty?

I bought a Deuter III for DD1 when she was about 10 months, and it's still going strong 6 years later. I  it. So much so that I'm having a hard time bringing myself to sell it, even though DS is 3.5 now and we rarely use it!

I can still carry my 5 yo in it comfortably for about an hour  It's a super great awesome carrier!

Um. I really like ours. :p

You need to try on different packs and see what works best for you.

For light hikes, I still prefer the Ergo. If I need a hydration bladder or some extra gear, though, I reach for the KidComfort III. At the time, the Deuter I bought had the smallest torso size, but now I think there's one (KidComfort II) which adjusts to 14". That would have been better for me (I'm not quite 15").

Use good trekking poles. They do help with balance.

I have only used a Kelty, but the waist strap on it was a lifesaver for me at DD's soccer games. I don't know if the others offer a waist strap or not, but it takes the weight off your shoulders if you do it tightly.

Thanks everyone!

I REALLY want an ergo, but I have a mei tai (the baby and I both dislike it) and a baby bjorn (baby likes it, but it hurts my back), so I don't think I can justify spending the money, especially since DH would never wear it. He'd wear a frame carrier though.

Definitely leaning towards the Deuter KC III.

I have a Dueter II for my son and it is great. I love that the seat is much more of a seat and they aren't hanging from between the legs. Also the side access is great.
