Air travel-Best way to check a car seat.

I know that it is not recommended BUT....what would be the best scenario here for checking a Graco Nautilus?
Left packed in original box and packaging
unpacked and broken down and put in individual pieces in separate pieces of luggage?

I'm not sure which is the better option, but I'm wondering why this would need to be checked. Does the child not have his/her own seat because he/she isn't yet 2 years old?

Carrier is Lufthansa.

It's a 14 hour plus flight and child is super tall- 48" and we all are more comfortable with just using the lap belt. We've flown this many, many times before and it doesn't work anymore with a car seat.

In that case, I would prefer it shipped in its original packaging, I would probably add packing peanuts for my own peace of mind. If for whatever reason a piece of your luggage gets lost, it wouldn't be good to be missing a piece.

This is my personal opinion, and I'm not sure if there is a higher risk of structural damage to the seat one way or the other.
