Question 3 across - who goes in the middle?

I am putting kids 3 across. Assuming no puzzle issues, the 1 ffing kid goes in the middle and the 2 rfing go on the sides? Or is there something I'm not considering? We are looking at new (to us) cars for husband, and I'd like to be sure I'm trying out seats in the right order.

Ideally, yes. That way the least protected child is in the most protected spot. However, three across situations aren't always ideal and the seats may not fit that way.

Also- I wouldn't pass on a car that was safe and fit our budget (and our family) just because I couldn't fit seats in a specific order. Also, different seats may work better than others. I would find the car first, and then the people on this site will provide great advice.
