And this, my friends, is why you don't

check your carseat when you fly.

I found DD1's old Marathon in the basement. We had it before knowing anything about safety. We bought it because it was cute.

We were too cheap to buy her a ticket. Of course I know better now.

The airline refused to take responsibility and Britax told me it was okay to keep using. I didn't know much, but knew that it didn't seem safe. I put it away to deal with later, bought DD a new seat and forgot about it until the other day. Of course now it's waaaaay too late to do anything about (it's been nearly 4 years) but yeah. Don't check your seats if you don't want them tossed and thrown around.

I have never been to an airport or on a plane so I am very unfamiliar with all of this. It sounds like when you "check" you car seat they are tossing it into a pile or what? What would possess them to toss around a childs car seat like that??

To many baggage handlers, it's just like any other piece of luggage.

Yeahhh  Have you ever sat in an idling plane and watched the guys throw luggage under a plane? They're not gentle, by any stretch.

Oh, and what was the cover on that seat? I was dying to see.

Ashley Floral. :)

I knew they wouldn't be gentle with it, but being concerned mostly with how cute the seat was back then  I was more worried about them wrecking my cover than the seat. I didn't even think about the fact that they might wreck the seat itself.

Good thing I found this site.

This is what happened after I flew home and back. They offered me a seat that they had to use....I chose to use my seat for the 1 hour drive home, as I KNEW where my seat had been, and trusted it over whatever the airlines would have given me.

Many airlines won't insure your car seat unless you check it (with luggage) in a box. I've never had an issue with gate checking , however. Though always in a padded bag.
