affordable carseat for poor countries

I was reading the University of Michigan Alumnus Magazine and read that two individuals there (not sure if they are professors or research assistants) are making a prototype for affordable carseats in poor countries.

It does not use plastic injection molding, which has high start-up costs, but available materials.

That's basically all I know so far. Interesting! It is called the M-Seat.

Very interesting! Looks scary to me but much better than nothing, which is what the norm is now in many developing countries. I can see the need for this.

What a neat idea. I can't imagine what would happen to a child in a side impact though. Ouch.

Biomedical engineering students. :)

I think everyone should be able to view all of these links (one might be behind a firewall, but I can't tell).

This video shows the child restraint in a rear-facing crash test: [ame="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HOHnbmduG-M"]Rear Facing Child Crash Restraint Test - YouTube[/ame] (I think this video was made before the seat passed NHTSA standards - they made modifications to the seat and met the standards.)
