Could we lobby the AAP?

I've been thinking that it would be so great if peds and hospitals gave parents some sort of small handout with the basics on car seat usage which would also direct them to this website if anyone had questions. Has anyone ever tried a petition or something like it to get the AAP's attention on this subject?

I'm being lazy... but I'm sure someone here has a quick link to the 3 page or so article from their Pediatric's Journal... the one that really describes how doctors should talk to patients about rear facing... not the quick one that everyone took as "the aap now recommends to age 2" article... the big long one.

Anyhow - I got a local safety expert, who also happens to be a Pediatrician, to email (spam) it to all our local doctors...

He put it very bluntly to me... he said something along the lines of... doctors are arrogant (his words... not mine)... and they won't talk to anyone but other doctors about things 'they know' - so he said the only way to get the info out there was if he passed around...

and it did work to some extent.

So I say find a doctor who believes in what you're talking about... and ask them to pass it around to their social networks.

I work for the AAP. Really, we can make policy after policy but we can't make doctor's enforce it. So, yes the AAP recommends rearfacing as long as possible. We publish that in our newsletters, yet doctors either don't read the memos and newsletters or just choose to ignore them.

It just seems like there should be something in place that is uniform at a national level. I'm sure some parents would follow better practices if they were informed. Not every parent out there is a car seat freak. :D

Exactly. The only reason I even know about ERF is because ds1 was a huge toddler, and I knew I didn't want to put him in a booster at age 2. I came across this forum while searching for high weight harnessing options. If I would have had a normal-sized child, I would not have been researching car seats in the first place. The only thing I knew about car seats prior to that, I had learned at my prenatal classes. I wonder if the prenatal class instructors mention ERF now? I love my pediatrician's office, but when ds2 had his 9-month check-up, they were handing out information stating that babies who had reached 20 pounds could now be turned ff. I didn't get the sheet until after we had seen the doctor. I made a comment to the medical assistant, since I'm pretty sure that recommendation doesn't even meet the legal minimum. She said that she would mention it to the doctor.

It would be great if it were addressed in prenatal classes, but I suspect it is not. They only told me I needed a car seat to be able to take the baby out of the hospital. :(
