A few weeks ago my neighbor and I started carpooling. She takes my boys to school and I bring her 10 and 11 year old home. I always walk my kids to her car and make sure they are buckled correctly and my 6.5 year old has the belt positioned in the booster right. My 10.5 year old passes the 5 Step Test and behaves in the car, wears his belt correctly. My kids are great about it. This is what I was used to.
Well every single day that I have picked up the neighbors kids I have had problems. They want to buckle up with the backpacks still on. They want to put the shoulder strap behind them. And on some days they don't even want to buckle up. I spend about 5 min. telling them lets go..buckle up right, no backpacks on you, and teaching the them the proper way to wear a seatbelt. I have been VERY nice but firm. I have said that my car doesn't drive until everyone is safe. My younger son told them..My mom just wants to keep you guys safe. And my older son said yeah..she is kinda into that.lol
Well today went great!!! They buckled up the right way and I didn't have to say a word for the first time! I am so happy. I made sure to praise them for it. I just hope that they are using what they learn in their parents cars. I can hope! Just wanted to share.
