I have a toyota tacoma 99 extra cab, I have been driving with my son in the front seat, with the air bag turned off, the only place a rf seat will fit. As he aproaches 20 lbs I am shopping for a ff seat that will fit in the back "seat". Any suggestions. Also, I know that rf is safest and the back seat is safest. If you could only choose one, would you chose ff in the back or rf in the front?
thank you for the forum and great info.

Great question!

I would probably prefer to have my own child rear-facing in the front seat, assuming the airbag was turned off.

Your Tacoma also has an acceptable offset crash test safety cage result, which should reduce the risk of passenger comparment intrusion.

Sweden is often acclaimed for having very low fatality rates for children in motor vehicle crashes, in great part due to the fact that they also tend to have kids remain rear-facing to 3-4 years. It is also much more common there to have rear-facing seats in the front, but I believe passenger side frontal airbags are not as common as they are in the USA.

Just my 2 cents :)

Don't forget that many car seats have a minimum forward-facing weight limit of 22 lbs., so even though your son is getting to 20 lbs., he still may be too small for many seats.

How old is your son? I absolutely would not forward-face a child before age 1. I agree with Darren on rear-facing in the front seat as long as the air bag is off.
