I got an email from mamabite that gave me this link: healthycar.org. You can look up your child's car seat and see which dangerous chemicals were used in the making and how many of these chemicals are in the seat. It also gives you a little bar guide that tells you wether or not you should be concerned about the seat. Here are there seats listed as "most concerned" "least concerned". I found this very interesting that Britex was on the "most concerned" list for convertibles.

Booster
Least Concern
Sunshine Kids Monterey Expandable Booster Red 0.0

Maxi Cosi Rodi Bijan 0.2

Most Concern Britax Regent Onyx 3.6

Alpha Sport Vantage Booster Blue Steel 4.6

Convertible
Least Concern
Sunshine Kids Radian 65 Champagne 0.0

Orbit Toddler Car Seat Mocha 0.2

Most Concern Britax Roundabout Onyx 3.0

Britax Marathon Onyx 4.4

Infant
Least Concern
Graco Snugride Sterling 0.1

Graco Passage 540 Travel System Mary Ann 0.1

Most Concern Evenflo Journey Elite Travel System Le Grand Jungle 2.8

Maxi Cosi Mico Juice 3.4

Anyways, Just wanted to share. I found it interesting. I've NEVER thought about chemicals when it comes to carseats....

They're used to make the covers flame retardant. As far as I know no one has gotten sick from their seat, and most kids aren't in them long enough to make a difference anyway (for instance, I'd be far more concerned over the same levels in their mattresses where they do spend 10-12 hours a day).

It's not great, but they're there to protect our kids. My guess is within the next ten years or so everyone will switch to something more environmentally friendly, but for now this is what they use.

What's in my car seat, I wonder? Certainly I can't just be sitting on foam and frame. But I'm not concerned.

I'm not saying that you should be concerned.... I'm just saying that it's interesting. I, myself, have never even THOUGHT about it until right now.

Orbit is introducing covers that don't contain fire retardant chemicals (they use wool instead, which is naturally fire resistant).

I was very excited when I recounted that to DH last night. He quickly pointed out how great that was (sarcastically) considering how toxic the rest of the car is.

Even so.

why of why do the onyx regents have to be on this list!
I  my regents...

I wonder though... what are the possible effects of these chemicals?
I mean we all hear about BPA and the like so I wonder are they dangerous ... or just annoying to those of us trying to purge the chems

I was also going to point out that it's probably a negligent amount compared to how toxic the car itself is.

On the other hand, whoever posted that informed for life site regarding car ratings - thanks. All I can think of whenever I get into my car is that it's a death trap! If I don't die from the plastic fumes, a fender bender will probably get me. I've dubbed it "the death trap" now whenever referring to it!
