For anyone not familiar with this product, here is a link to it:

I don't mind the head roll thing around the baby. That isn't too different then a blanket and it doesn't go behind the child. The wedge thing would bother me somewhat. I would only buy something like that if it came from the carseat manufacturer and was tested with the seat.

I don't think the OP can see that link :)

The Hug Me Joey (wedge that goes under the cover) is unsafe. The "rolli" effectively does what rolled receiving blankets do. The "weji" does what pool noodles do- although I don't know if it is or isn't safe.

Basically they're trying to solve problems we have already found solutions to, or in the case of the Joey trying to create a problem.

i was also interested in the fact that their website says its crash tested, but i couldn't find any other information regarding the "crash test" on the website

They tested that in the nicu i work in. And i talked about it here with the techs.. I wasnt impressed. I think the wedge isn't good, nor the thing on top of the head. Personally I think the receiving blankets and burp rags work just as well. In the nicu, it made no difference in passing a car seat test, and didnt seem the keep any kid "happier" or "more comforted"..

As the others said, they are ways to properly install the car seat, and "pad" the baby so they fit in the carseat, that don't have potential to be an interfering product.

Id say , Pass.

well,

actually, also a nicu rn, here. and we are "product reviewing" them. problem is, we don't have a car seat tech here, nor do we even have nurses that even know how to work car seats, yet we are repsosible for signing off on their car seat evals...(well i don't, i refuse to do them). im the closest thing they have to any car seat safety, etc. it is such an awful issue in our unit. expired car seats, car seats in boxes when they bring them to the unit, parents have no idea, nurses have no idea, equals huge liability issues imo.

anyway, i was thinking i didn't like the looks of the wedge, but the other piece didnt seem too bad, WAY better then what they were using. OMG, ya'll would have died. it is that bad. i *try* to give my opinions on the subject as often as possible, and ride it off as mommy advice vs. wanna be tech. i wish i could find someone to do the course where i live. (they save their spots for police officers and firemen :( )

question- sometimes we are sending home preemies that are not even 5 lbs. what car seat do yall like best for them. chico key fit?

The Chicco Keyfit and the Safety First OnBoard both fit preemies pretty nicely. I think the Britax Chaperone with the preemie insert is a good option as well.

I was the first CPST to ever work in my NICU. I wanted to vomit when I first started working there and saw the carseat practices. They sent kids home doing just about everything wrong. (i particularly loved the "carseat test" what was the seat at the totally wrong angle with a swaddled baby w/o the harness even touched)

AS a tech, I rewrote our carseat testing policy, and began teaching classes during required education days for all the nicu, mom baby, and pediatric nurses. I did some teaching on the mom baby floor for moms, and I did car seat teaching with every nicu mom, (small unit to it wasn't hard)I also got my name and contact info out, so I spent alot of time going to help someone..

We have alot of issues with parents seeming to have no interest in learning how to adjust their own carseats. Oh well, I always help when I can and hopefully some are coming away with more knowledge.

For under 5 lb babies.. Initially they were using the cosco car bed. I made them stop bc they would tell a mom to use it bc the baby was under 5 lbs, well the cosco car bed is rated from 5-20 lbs. So why send a kid home in a seat they dont weigh enough for, is hard to adjust, and more tricky to install properly?

We now have the angel ride car bed for kids that are under 5 lbs and parents arent providing a 4lb seat for. (and that rare 3lber that goes home).

Im pretty hardcore on not letting kids go out the door with extra's except blankets and burp rags to help position them properly... They call me the carseat nazi.

Id love to see the new seat that promotes its use with preemies, has a different positioner that ive never seen in person. Im not sure if its a compass or a cosco...

I would say where I work, 60% of the kids go home in a hospital provided seat, a cosco 5-22lb, no base infant seat.

Some parents provide seats, and most are graco's. The occasional chicco (which is just sooo lovely with 4lbs! and preemies in general), or baby trend.
I even had an orbit once. My coworkers didnt believe me when I told them the price tag on that one.

The on board! Yes that it. I have never seen it in person, or the new britax chaperone in person either. Id like to play with them..

Lauren, you deserve major props for the work you do! What hospital do you work at? (I ask because my son did time in a NICU in 04, I wonder if it was the same hospital :) )

I was at BMC until august 19th. *cry* they terminated me bc of my work related injury that still has me all messed up. When I get cleared to work again (well, IF I ever get cleared again).. Im going to looking into worcester before trying the city again. I had a 1+ commute that I wasnt in love with :)

:( :(

But BMC...dood. War zone  Seriously, whenever I transported there I seriously had the urge to DUCK AND ROLL as I was pulling people into the ER bay :ROTFLMAO:

Umass is a fantastic place (Memorial is the bebe campus). Level III NICU there, and a really nice birthing ward, although I wouldn't give birth there again if I didn't have to :p

Ya.. I worked in the hood. LOL.. I always tell people "imagine the 2 worst towns for violent crimes.. I work at the trauma center in between" HEHE. It really opened my eyes. I worked at a VERY nice, new, affluent, ritzy hospital in FL before moving up here..

I have to say tho.. sometimes its really entertaining.. Like, being "late" for work bc you cant get into the building bc of a fight.. or seeing the ambulances waiting in line to get to the bays..

Ive heard good things about Umass's NICU. Id be very interested in working there. It seems more like what I was used to in fl than BMC. (my fl unit was like, boston childrens, brigham and mass gen in one. 132 bed nicu, echmo, all specialist came there.. it was awesome. i miss it, but not the FL paycheck!)

I figure Ill end up delivering someday at umass if im still living here. I like the hospital in leominster, but I'd flip and be a super crazy mom if my child was takin to a nicu in worcester while i stated in leominster, and im high risk the moment i get pregnant. :(

My mom is a nurse and CBE and used to work up at Leominster. If you're used to excitement and a varied work load, you'll probably be bored stiff at Leominster.

Oh I have no real desire to work at Leominster.. The drive would be nice, but you are right, id be bored silly. I hate having to send patients somewhere else for "higher" care. I like to work in the super intense ICU's/truama areas. (Now gimme 20 yrs and I might feel different!)

Until all this junk with the injury/disability is figured out, im sitting here..and sitting here.. and sitting here. lol.

If i get to go back to work, Im going to try UMASS.. ive been offered a position with Fallon Clinic pedi urgent care, so thats always on the back burner if needed.
