we bought a graco nautilus for ds and we may have to take it back dh
keeps switching the seat to his car to take our son on errands
he puts the seat in put ds in the harness and then proceeds to use the seat belt on him like it was a booster i have caught him twice doing this and keep telling him that it's not allowed he says ok i swear i feel like screaming so loud that all of you would be able to hear him

how can i explain to him that it's completely unsafe to be doing this

i am so close to taking ds seat away from him but ds loves this seat

WOW! I would BEAT the crap outta my DH if I caught him doing this. I would also ban him from taking our DS ANYWHERE! I have yelled at my DH for not getting the straps on the car seat tight enough. I finally talked to him about it & found out that he was having trouble with the continuos loop harness on the seat.

Also is there anyway you could afford to buy a seat to leave in his car for him? Doing this would ensure that he would not have to attempt an install if you can not trust him to install it properly. I leave a seat in my DH's car. He knows HOW to install a seat for just in case, but I feel better having done the install myself! So If there was any possible way then I would do this.

Also how old is you child, what does he weigh & how tall is he. Is he old enough & heavy enough to start booster training? If so then maybe do this & get a booster for DH's car for when he is ready!

I think you need a second seat that will be permanently installed in your husband's car.

Explain to him that it's safety equipment; if it is not used properly, it will not function properly to protect your son in a crash. Tell him if he needs to move it, to come and get you if he won't learn to do it right.

Does it? I can't find that it does ("provide for the protection of each person younger than eight years of age by using a child restraint device to restrain each person in the manner prescribed by the manufacturer of the device; ").

I wouldn't put a new 4yo who weighs 35lbs in a booster seat, but I would consider it at 5+, in a seat designed for smaller kids, for short trips/booster training (and especially in place of a seat that is being badly misused).

when we went to the safety fair at the school for the booster seats demo it said 4 yrs and 40 lbs so i assumed it was utah law

It's not. The old law required restraints (boosters or harnessed) through age 4, so basically 5. Now it's 8 years or 4'9" with a proper use clause - meaning you have to follow manufacturer directions. It's a good idea to not use a booster until at least age 4 or let kids under 12 ride in the front seat. Those are often on the safety info we hand out but aren't actually laws here.

And even great advice hinges on proper use -- if your husband will not use the Nautilus properly, sell it (don't return it if you've been using it) and buy a good booster.

(Note that I'm only touching on the carseat part of this issue, not the marital/parenting part.)

I made sure to train DH on this matter early. I am the only one allowed to install seats, unless there is an urgent situation where I am not capable of doing so. He and my mother are the only other two allowed. Ever.
I even questioned the police officer's install.

If he can't learn to do it properly, then the seat is not safe.
I suggest supervised installs, your install only, or a second and permanent seat.

Maybe DS could be showed the correct points to an install? (must be tight to the seat, belt must go through here, harness should be "this" tight, etc.) He could remind DH as he installs it.

Installing it RF. That's so cute. If he thought to try it this way first, some of your carseat drilling has gotten through. Don't give up.

we paid 30 dollars for it at wally world not really worth the time to sell it
and with a july 9 2009 manufacturer date we will just store it in the basement
