I use california baby when I need to clean the straps on my seats. I mix it with a little water, then make sure the straps are rinsed really well. It's mild enough that I'm comfortable using it, and it gets most of the stuff off the straps.

I'm hesitant to use any cleaners on them... if they're bad enough, why not just replace the harness straps?

Oh, there not bad, I just wanted to clean them so someone else doesn't throw them in the washer or do something that's a no-no.
I ended up just washing with water till they looked decent.

I used warm water with a toothbrush (didn't saturate the straps, just got them damp) and that worked wonders on my harnesses!

How's that for timing! I gave the kids ice cream on the way home from the beach yesterday and they fell asleep with them! I have my Radians on the back porch right now and was just taking a nursing break before cleaning them... I was going to spot-clean the straps with a nail brush and hot water and a touch of baby wash as the directions say "mild soap"... wondering why some of you are hesitant to use soap? Does it damage the straps?

Oh, and any tips on cleaning the buckles? (especially the crotch - it's so sticky!)

I'm not a tech, but every manual I've had says mild soap or mild detergent. I consider california baby to be about the mildest soap I can think of. We use it on dd and even our ped has said she has the most sensitive skin he's ever seen. He can't even put the stethoscope on her skin because she gets a rash from the cleaner. If it's gentle enough for the child that can't even use johnson's I can't imagine it would do anything to the straps.
