WWYD re large 2 year-old

My ds 2 is a 2 year, 5 month-old giant. He is very nearly 40 inches tall and weighs 32-33 lbs with summer clothes on. He is currently rf in a tf. Would you buy a Complete Air to keep him rf or call it a day and turn him when he is 34 or 35 clothed? I already tried a Radian XT for him and he did not have tons of room to grow. Also, if I'm going to turn him ff soon I want him in a seat with some sort of side impact protection besides the shell, like it is on the TF. Suggestions? I am torn.

I'm in the same position. My 2yr old dd is 36.75 inches and 29lbs with summer clothes and her marathon only rear faces to 33lbs. For now the scale is going to be our very close friend! Dh and I have agreed that we will not turn her before she's 3 unless she somehow doesn't fit rear facing into any seat available. For us that probably means a complete air is in our future, possibly a 40lb rear facing radian if I find I can get a good install. At this point it really is up to you, though. You have rear faced to the limits of his seat which is more than a lot of children get. Is it in your budget to get a new seat? If so then I can honestly say I would do it, but that's because I more than likely will be.

My two year old is 34 pounds and 36 inches tall (at 2 years and 3 months.)
Our solution was a MyRide.
BabiesRUs sale for $130 or so; 40 pound RF; 65 pound FF; side impact tested with foam; fit AMAZING into my tiny little car; fit my very LARGE child amazing. His legs were not even bent with his shoes off.

Why spend twice as much on the CA?

He's too tall for the MR--he has zero growing room rf in a MA, and I think the shell on the MR is the same. As I said in my earlier post, he didn't have enough growing room in the Radian XT to make it worth the bucks to buy it. He's so huge....

Because the CA has THAT much more shell height. My ds2 *might* make it to 2 1/2 in a MR. Or I can buy a CA which will most likely get him to 4 or nearly 4. At that point, the $100 extra for the extra year and a half is TOTALLY worth it. Plus the CA has an 8 year lifespan, so it'll last us plenty long with #3 as well.

I guess what I am struggling with is whether or not to buy a new seat to keep a kid who will be 2.5 soon rear-facing. The money is really not an issue. Do you all feel at his age he will be that much safer rf as opposed to ff in a tethered seat in a safe car (2005 Sienna)? I'd rather hang on to the cash for a Frontier or something later, if the safety difference is not that much. He's my last kid, btw, so no one to pass it down to.

Thanks for your input! :D

For my own children, if money were not an issue, I would buy a seat for a 2 or even a 3 year old to continue to rear-face. I would aim to rear-face until at least 4.

My feeling is that rear-facing has proven safety benefits, so I'd rather spend the money on an extended rear-facing seat for a kid under 4.

If you can afford it and you think the child will have more than a few months in a 40# seat, yes, I think the safety difference is substantial.
