Child who turned three TODAY and is now in a backless booster

My son went to his friend's house today for a birthday celebration. She turned THREE today. And, on the way out, I noticed the backless booster in the car. She probably weighs about 33 lbs and is definitely not 40 inches. I know that she technically fits in some backless ones (30 lbs, etc) but it is so unsafe. And, it makes me sad. She was in a convertible seat that she has defnitely not outgrown, so I don't know why they switched her this soon. :(

*most* backless boosters have a minimum weight of 40 lbs, not 30. In fact, AFAIK, there is only one with a 30 lb limit, and I can't even remember which it is.

The Strollee McKinley has a 30 lb. min.--we have that one. But I'm pretty sure this isn't the one that she has since the Strollee isn't readily available. I bet she has a backless Turbo, which does have the 40 lb. minimum. I don't understand why people want to rush their kids into backless boosters--they can't be that comfortable to a young child, my son doesn't even really like riding in them at almost 5 and 44 lbs.

Yikes.

Even if a 36-month-old child did weigh 40 pounds, I have a REALLY hard time believing that child would be mature enough to ride in a backless booster. Wow.

Well, we have a Cosco Ambassador (I think) that is a backless booster starting at 30 lbs. I've never used it though; never even opened the box. But, they do sell such seats here, although hers did look more like a backless Turbo.

A friend of mine has her barely 3yo (bday in Oct) in a booster and I just about died! It's a high back, but still! She is a TINY girl...she's about the size of my 2yo and weighs only 30lbs!! They switched her b/c baby brother outgrew his infant carseat and they didn't want to buy another convertible seat. I *think* I convinced them to buy her a Scenera and put her back in a convertible. I explained the safety issues and also our state law (Idaho) that says boosters for 4years and 40 pounds.

I've got to get on the phone and call another friend today...I noticed yesterday at church that she still has her 11 month old that weighs 23 pounds and is super tall in an infant seat. His head is about 2 inches over the top of the shell.
