Anybody want to through out some ideas about securing stuff in a wagon?

I drive an escort wagon. My son rearfaces center of the rear seat. I'd really like to get some ideas on what I can do to secure cargo. My friend just lost a relative who was hit from behind by a suitcase during an accident and now I'm extra paranoid. They were driving home from thanksgiving.

I have three tether anchors across the roof. None are in use just yet. I also have vinyl roll thing to cover the cargo area, but I doubt it will hold anything down in a crash, it's litterally like a windowshade. It however has two plastic clips that click into holes to tether it in the event of a crash. What I'd give for anchors on the floor of the cargo area.

I'm driving down for xmas, so I'd really like to find a solution or get some ideas. I know I can use the areas directly behind the front seats, since they're pretty safe. When I buy groceries, I either put them there, or put them in the cargo area with the heaviest stuff right up against the back seat. Other than that, what can I do?

  1. Vertical Net / Partition | 700mm x 1300mm
  2. Horizontal Boot Floor Net | 700mm x 1300mm
  3. Longitudinal Pocket | 350mm x 1300mm
  4. Transverse Pocket | 700mm x 650mm
CAUTION! Heavy, sharp-edged or fragile items must not be transported in the luggage net. The Net is only designed for the holding of light items during normal type of driving. That looks promising. I was thinking some kind of net or soemthing, just between the tether anchors and the anchors for the cargo cover. I realize it isn't tested and may not offer much protection, but I figure it's a better than nothing as a last minute precaution before I make my drive for christmas. I'll definately look into that.

Depending on what you have for stuff to hook onto in the car, you could use ratchet straps that are rated for 200lbs. They are great for holding light loads, and are definately user friendly. Just make sure you get the actual ratcheting ones, and not the friction ones, because the ratchets are much nicer to use.

I have some friction ones, but there's nothing to hook too on the floor of my cargo area. Just the tether hooks up on the roof, and the hooks that hold my back seat, but I don't want to use those, since the're not designed to support anything except the seat.
