HELP: Local Health Dept and STHP...

Are both giving out wrong information to parents. A friend of mine who was going to put her dd back to RF said that the health dept and state hw patrol said that 18 months was the limit for RF. What can I do? (besides link them to here and such?)

Tell her to look at the side of her child restraint, read the manual and to contact a Child Passenger Safety Technician. Health departments may be good for free vaccines, and do occasionally keep give away car seats and helmets, but they are NOT educated in Child Passenger Safety.

The other thing that occurs to me is that your friend may not have been honest with you. "18 months" is a pretty random number that I've never heard before and it's highly unlikely that two sources would come up with that same random number to one person.

Do you think it's possible she doesn't want to be bothered and made up a little story to justify her position?

Right, to have a low income seat distribution program, I'm fairly positive there has to be a certified tech on staff. Our local health department's tech, forever, was the only tech in our whole county. She recently let her certification lapse and the health department can no longer do the distribution program. So now there is nothing for the entire county (and we're one of the lowest-income counties in the state, in a state with the second-highest unemployment rate in the country right now). We do have two cops who are certified.

The best thing you can do, IMO, is find out if these are actual certified techs giving this advice, and if so, talk to them. Provide them with updated information (preferably via handouts from reputable sources). If they aren't receptive, consider reporting them to higher-ups (head of Safe Kids in the area, for example, or state CPS coordinator).

Thanks guys. These people are actually certified but I told her that just because someone has a label doesn't mean they know everything they talk about... I'll try to get a hold of them and give them correct info. Anyone have a site where I can print off up to date handouts?
