Son osteopenic

My 1 yr old son is osteopenic. I still have him rearfacing and due to the osteopenia I want to keep him rearfacing as long as physically possible. DH doesn't agree but he can just deal with it, he's not the one who knows all the medical stuff with DS. I've heard there is a car seat in sweden that would keep him rearfacing longer than car-seats in the US. How would I go about getting approval for this seat? I think I was told it was a Multi Tech.

Cost is not an issue here, I can figure things out and get it. The issue is his safety and with more fragile bones than typical children his age I am obviously very concerned.

We've got 1 ERF seat right now (the Graco My Ride 65) and a new one coming out in a month (Safety First Complete Air). Both go to 40 lbs rearfacing, and the Safety First seat has the taller shell. Since they are available here, cheaper, and also legal I would go that route first. See how long they last and then re-evaluate the need for a foreign seat in three years or so :thumbsup:

This was mythought except they have told me that with his treatment he will probably be osteopenic until at least 5 or 6 yrs. Assuming we can stop the chemo and steroids as planned and he doesn't re-activate. I'm hoping to have things fu\igured out in advance, just in case, because its going to take the time to get everythign cleared and figured out. And my mom goes to sweden once ever 2 years...

I would just stick with the US seats until he maxes them out, THEN think about getting a swedish seat. By the time he maxes out the seats here, there will probably be more higher weight rf'ing seats to choose from. There are already 2 40 lb ones on the market, like maedze said. There are some issues with the swedish ones, like cost. They are technically illegal to use. I don't know about getting a prescription. Everyone says you can, but I've never heard of it actually happening. Anyway, if you shelled out $400-$500 for a seat and then got in a wreck a week later, you'd be SOL because I highly doubt an insurance company would cover the cost of an illegal seat.

I think importing a seat is fine and don't judge anyone who does it, I just want you to know that it's probably something you'll want to wait until you absolutely HAVE to do it, rather than jump on it now, know what I mean? Hope that makes sense.

Exactly. The cost is huge and you are SOL if you crash once you get it. If you needed it NOW (i.e, son is 4 years old and 40 lbs) I'd say go for it, but you have a LOT of time. You may as well get maximum use out of current seats that are legal to use and that can be replaced in the event of an accident.

Just want to chime in about this part. Joel's family got NHTSA to approve a MultiTech for him with a prescription, so if the OP does (eventually) decide to go that route, she may want to consider contacting Grandpa.
