Poll to follow...

When counting slots do you count from the bottom or the top? I sometimes see "my child is on the third slots," but am never sure *exactly* what that means. I usually try to specify - "second from the top," etc.. I can see the logic for either direction. Counting from the bottom makes sense as that's the order you use them (and I think that's how it's specified in some manuals.) Counting from the top down is a cultural norm.

So, what do *you* mean when you say "my child is on the X slot"? :D

I count from both, but always try to specify. Sofi in on the 2nd from bottom slots on the TF and MA. J is on the 2nd from top slots of the GN (ok, he was, but he's not now). I think my brain just goes with whatever they are closer to.

I start at the bottom. I tend to believe that people that are not as carseat savy may tend to start at the top, because their logic is different than starting from birth (bottom slot) and going up/higher number as they get older/bigger.

Therefore, when I post on the board, I will specify x slot from the bottom so that I know that my audience will always know exactly which slot I am referring to, no matter how they may normally count.

I'm glad you posted this, I always count from the bottom, but never think to specify when talking to friends, etc.

I always count from the bottom, except for in the Regent when I say "second-from-top" because I can never remember how many slots their are in it.

I don't think I count  It's just 'second from the top' or 'bottom' or 'second from the bottom' or 'third from the top' or whatever seems to be the clearest communication at the time...maybe with more emphasis on the higher slots because that's an indicator of how much time is left in the seat.

Interesting question

i start from wherever my eyes and finger are closer to. :) doesn't matter if it's at the top or bottom. it's the same number either way :). perhaps it has to do with the difference between the way men and women do math???

I go bottom to top, because that's the order they're outgrown in.

However with a few seats I do say "second from top" or whatever.

Bottom to top. Unless they're on the top, then I just say "the top slots". The TF is numbered bottom to top too, so Bram is definitely on the "second" slots.

Yes, it doesn't change the total, but if you say, "my child is in the third slot" of a 5-slot seat, does that mean they're in the third from the bottom, or third from the top, if you get my drift. ;)

And as for the men/women math thing, I'll have you know I invented my own math for Grade 11 Chemistry that was accurate 98% of the time. :p (My teacher only discovered that at the end of the year when I handed in all my assignments at once ('Cause why would I want to do them in a timely fashion?) He was both horrified and impressed.

I count from the bottom because my DS2 is at the bottom slot of his frontier. When communicating, I would just say how many slots from bottom or how many slots from top, depending on whether its nearer the top or bottom.

I don't have a preference either way and it really depends on the context for me. Either way, I always try to specify if I'm talking about from the top or from the bottom of the shell for clarity.
