How important are "wings"

Are wings on a carseat really going to help that much during side impact? How safe is it to get a seat without wings?
TIA!

As there are no side impact standards we can't answer your questions. Any five point harness offers a lot of side impact protection. I'd go for a harness without wings over a booster with wings, for instance, for a child who fit and sat properly in both. But beyond that we don't know.

We've had seats with both wings and no wings (and even one without a shell). In a booster I like wings, but in a harnessed seat I consider them more a place to rest a head than an added safety feature (they may be, but that's not why I think they're awesome).

A five point harness offers very good side impact protection because it does a better job of containing the body than a booster with a lap/shoulder belt.

RF also really increases SIP because the head will kind of fall into the curve of the seat.

I would be more worried about side impact protection forward facing in an outboard position if there were no airbags. That said, you really don't need the wings for the protection, there are some seats with deep sides but without actual headwings.

i'd be worried even with airbags. especially with shorter kids and cars with lower back seats, the airbag is going to deploy higher than the child's head. side airbags are optimized for an average seated adult height.

I'm a big fan of wings. I won't buy seats without them.

That said, the safest seat is one that fits your child, installs well in your vehicle, fits your budget and is used correctly 100% of the time.
