The big rubber square pieces on the harness of a Britax seat. The Roundabout and Infant seats by Britax don't have them, but all the others do.:)

HUGS are the rubbery things (don't ya just  my technical terms!) on a Britax car seat. These must be used while a child is FF but not while RFing and many parents seem to get the harness tighter without them while their child is RFing. Why they must be used, I am not 100% certain but from the research I have done is it looks like the Britax convertibles did not pass crash testing over 50lbs without the HUGS.

I am sure one of the techs will chime in soon, and hopefully they have more information to pass along.

You can see the HUGS in my son's photo which is included in my siggy pic :)

I read somewhere that they are meant to reduce head excursion. Sorry, I cannot site my source as I don't remember.

So, for the other brands that don't have them, does that make them less safe? Sorry if that's a stupid question...

No, it doesn't technically mean seats without them are less safe. Seats that do not come with HUGS perform/crash test properly without them.

actually, the story behind HUGS is that some time ago, britax had a seat (forgot the model-- i'm sure others here will chime in with it) that failed the FMVSS213 head excursion test. so, britax engineers designed this fix-- an afterthought, which did the trick. then in a stroke of marketing genius, they patented it and marketed it with a cutesy name. now everyone thinks that britax makes only superior seats because of all these patented features.

so in essence, HUGS was a patch to bring a seat that couldn't even pass the head excursion test up to snuff.
