If you are in Texas PLEASE call the Governor today!! It's easy. I just asked if he had signed it. She said she could take my vote and she did. Here is the info.

It still may become law if he doesn't sign it. Here is some info off the Texas legislature site:

http://www.tlc.state.tx.us/gtli/legproc/process_govact.html
Governor's action
Except in the case of a bill sent to the governor within 10 days of final adjournment, upon receiving a bill, the governor has 10 days in which to sign the bill, veto it, or allow it to become law without a signature. If the governor elects to veto the bill and the legislature is still in session, the bill is returned to the chamber in which it originated with an explanation of the governor’s objections. A two-thirds majority in each chamber is required to override the veto. If the governor neither vetoes nor signs the bill within the allotted time, the bill becomes law. If a bill is sent to the governor within 10 days of final adjournment, the governor has until 20 days after final adjournment to sign the bill, veto it, or allow it to become law without a signature.

He received the bill on 5/18 so tomorrow would be the 10 days limit that he has to veto it. If he signs it by tomorrow, it will become law. If he doesn't sign it it, it will also become law. The only thing we have to worry about is if he vetos it. Still worth a call though to make sure he knows there is support for it. Either way, I guess we will know tomorrow if Texas has a new law.

Katy, thanks so much for the info!!! I took a local gov't class in, ummm, 9th grade so I simply cannot remember how it all works. I cannot imagine him vetoing (is that a word) the bill. I'll NOT be a happy camper!!!

So, as long as he does not veto we are good. Fingers and toes are crossed.

ETA - current law is not even 4 and 40. It's under 5 or under 36 inches. Which means as soon as you hit 36 inches (and most 2-3 years old have) you are not required to sit in a child restraint. HORRIBLE.

That first article-- they put a kid in a car seat and the belt went over his neck, so they called it "ridiculous" and said that there "had to be a better alternative?"

There is.

It's called a properly fitting booster seat, if the kid is 4' tall already, or, if he can't sit still, a vest.

The bill had to either be signed by the governor today or vetoed. If he singed it becomes law, if he doesn't sign it, it become law. If he veto'd it, it would not become law. I searched earlier today and couldn't find any evidence that he had done anything. I assume it would be noted if he had veto'd.

I just caught that on the local news here that it passed and waiting on the signature, hopefully it won't be veto'd
