In the 2.5 years since having my DD, and since learning about Toni Perry's story, I have done all I could to educate myself about car restraint safety, and encouraged others to familiarize themselves with guidelines and recommendations. Today, I had first hand evidence of the importance of an appropriate restraint.
I was driving along a straight, wet road, with my DD in the back in her Safe'n'sound forward facing seat (She is 2.5 and has only recently moved to FF.) A few cars up, someone braked suddenly, causing a chain reaction of squealing tired and quick stopping. My brakes locked up in the wet and I hit the back of the car in front of me at speed. I can vividly recall seeing the child in the centre seat of the back of the car being flung forwards violently. If that child wasn't restrained in a 5 point harness, I have no doubt he would have been thrown into the front of the car, or even through the windscreen.
The image of that child's head snapping forwards will stay with me for a long long time, but thank heavens the mother of that child was cluey enough to have her probably 4y/o boy in an appropriate restraint. Keep up the good work, every person from here who knows their stuff might influence 5 other people to do their research, and that effect might well have helped avert a tragedy today. Reb
