Teen Parents

I went to visit one of my HS teachers today, she runs a pregnant teen program. :)eek: yes, I was a teen mom) They are part of her class even after they have their babies, and the fathers are there too.

I asked her if she still had a 'carseat class' like way back when I was a student. She said she did, but that this year because of funding they didn't.

I asked her if they had ever been told about ERF and she said no. I gave her a mini lesson and she asked me to email her with links or articles to help her students. :D

So, now I am asking YOU to help me. Please.

I know a lot of you have a ton of bookmarks and can do this in a giffy. :D

For distributing to people, I really like the free booklet you can order from USAA (here is the PDF version: http://www.usaaedfoundation.org/pdf/544.pdf). It has a lot of use/misuse pictures in it which is really handy.
To get it, go to: http://www.usaaedfoundation.org/
Select the "Order Publications" link at the top of the form.
Select publication "544 - Installing Child Safety Seats"
You can order up to 100 brochures at a time and they are free.

Ask Tiffany. All her stuff is very well written a easy to understand. I have sighted her website as a reference many times. She aslo has some great diagrams that show and spine development.

I just want to say I think you are doing great by doing what you can to help. what counts is trying to be a good parent, not how old you were when you become one.

I'm the CPST for our local Teen Pregnancy & Parenting Program, but I'm somewhat restricted because everything has to go through their caseworkers (at the child development council, which oversees daycare providers & which I'm told every county in my state is supposed to have).

Whenever possible, I have the family/families watch the video from www.carseat.org (no hyphen) a couple days before I meet with them. Ideally, I would like to then have an open discussion with a few families together, asking them to answer some basic true/false type questions (a survey that I also got from that website) before doing some hands-on spot the errors & installs.

More often than not, though, I have to rush through the survey (it gives me some insight into how much info they retained & what I should emphasize), then do the install right away one-on-one.

However, I created my website as a way to walk myself through ongoing workshops with homeschooled teens :) I haven't updated it recently because I'm switching to a page through my college instead. You're welcome to look through & share any of the info. Click my screen name & scroll down to visit my homepage.

With the ongoing workshops, I start with introductions (personal stories, etc.) The following week we review the basics of physics (there's a quiz & IIHS curriculum within my site). Then we learn about passive & active restraint systems (ELR/SLR, lap-only belts & airbags, etc.) Another week we learn about RF, then FF & boosters another time. I try to do it like a less intensive version of the technician certification, at least as far as the kind of information I cover. Just how indepth one might go would probably depend on the individual teens.

I'm slowly getting myself set up to eventually offer such services to the local highschool. Perhaps there's a CPST nearby that you might help fascilitate such a thing with?

Thanks a lot, I will just copy and paste all of the links to the teacher.

Tiffany, I don't think there is anyone in the immediate area. There is no money to compensate someone who would have to drive quite a ways. :(

This teacher is awesome, straight to the point and no non-sense. I learned a lot while in her program. I think she will do the best she can, to at least get these new parents interested in doing more research.
