Safe driving courses?

I want to know if anyone knows of a course in driving skills. I'm not asking about the ones the government makes you take when you got a ticket. I want to know if anyone knows of a course in driving skills. I want to know how to handle a car better. Where to "professional drivers" learn their stuff? It seems like there have been a few times in my life where I have lost control of the car- and thankfully regained it- and I want to know how to handle that kind of stuff. They don't really teach you that in driver's ed.

My dad offered to teach me how to do 180s safely and stuff, but never got around to it before he died. . . and I still want to learn.

ETA I just found this
http://www.bondurant.com/courses/courses.php#hpd
It's not in my state and it's holy-moly-expensive.
(I would love to give my dh a high-preformance course for a present one day though)

My local community college also offers a safe driving course. I don't know what it entails, but it might be another economical options.

I've heard of the Bondurant driving classes and (don't laugh) the AARP offers some but for seniors/AARP members, so they may be rather sedate in comparison. ;) There's another performance driving school/racing program, Barber maybe? Yup, here's the Barber website: http://www.skipbarber.com
If you pick up a car enthusiast type magazine like Car and Driver or Automobile, they usually have classified ads toward the back of the magazine for driving classes (along with after market car parts, Viagra substitutes, lol, etc.).

Hope you find a class to your liking, and have fun. :)

I looked at the local Community college and couldn't find anything. . . that doesn't mean they don't offer though. I'll have to call.

My husband gets Mopar Muscle, Collectors Guide, and Muscle Car enthusiast. I will look in there for sure.

Thanks for the tips!:)

I take a driving course every year but it's done through a local road race club here. They take you out on a closed road race course and teach you the limits of your car and how to handle it properly. Very informative course that is for sure.

You might check for a local road race track and contact them to see if they can get you in touch with a club that might do these course locally.

I am lucky I get to take these course I won't say for free b/c my dh has to pay a yearly membership to the track & club but he also road races.

Of course it freaks him out when I am on the track with his race car. LOL!!!

That's interresting, Jenny -- I never even thought of it, but I'm sure there's something like that around here ... we're only 20 minutes from the races in Watkins Glen :)

Yeah that is interesting. My husband is in a car club, and while they don't offer that I bet they might know who does! I'm asking next time we hang with them.
