I am a grandmother of four, and about 2 weeks ago, discovered that car seats do expire. Maximum is 6 years. One online site said minimun of 6 maximum of 10, but go with six years. At the foot of carseats an expiration dated is given. The one for my granddaughter expires in December 2014.

Also, when buying a new carseat from stores, make sure it has not expired. Some stores might try to sell car seats that they had in stock for a long time. You don't want to buy an expired car seat.

I also discovered that if pulled over by police, and they see a child in car seat, they can ask to look for expiration date, and give you a ticket if it is expired. I think current ticket price is around $500, but I can be wrong about amount. I do know it's high.

Much better to buy a car seat for 200, and avoid tickets.

Not everyone realizes that car seats do expire. My daughter didn't know. My daughter in law didn't know, and now we all know. Safety first,

Good points about raising awareness of seat's expirations, and to double check the seat's expiration before purchasing, which ultimately means verifying the date of manufacture and the manufacturer's specific expiration timeframe because not every seat has a 6 year expiration. Some seats such as Peg Peregos, for example, expire 5 years from their date of manufacture, while others like the Sunshine Kids Radian or Britax Frontier have longer usable lifespans before they would expire. Always best to verify before purchasing to be sure. :)

Where do you live, out of curiosity? I wasn't aware of any state in the U.S. where the fine is $500 for any carseat related violation, expiration or otherwise. :twocents:
