DH just discovered that his transmission is slowly dying in his Jetta. Sounds terrible in reverse. But it will probably last until spring if he really babies it. However, we just found in the paper an ad for a 1994 940 Volvo wagon (the boxy but good kind ). We really need cargo capacity and miss our old wagons dreadfully. So we're thinking of biting the bullet and trying to afford it. Called on it and it seems in really good condition for under blue book. DH is checking it out tomorrow or Monday and we'll have our mechanic inspect it.
It's too old for Consumer Reports ratings to be listed online. What I was wondering is where I could locate information about how dependable, safe & what it's child safety options are. It's 2 years older than the VW, but with the same mileage amount. It does have dual air bags. Does it have tether capability? It would be only used around town occasionally with Rowen & the Radian 65. The Camry would still be the long distance mommy car (yay )
Funny thing is that 'technically' the Jetta, even with the not-so-good Transmission, is worth about the same amount in fair condition as the Volvo is being sold for in good condition. So we could equal out if we were to sell the Jetta. Oh Bother, this is annoying. If the Jetta was a wagon, we'd fix it as soon as we could afford it. We just really need to be able to carry large stuff & DH has his battle gear to haul around.
I also get the idea that the owner will really work with us on the price.
Any advice, opinions, etc... is welcome. It's something I'm thinking really hard about (pluses & minuses), so I need all sorts of input.
