My MIL was in a car crash this morning- pictures of car included....

She and two friends were driving to the casino this morning. They were turning left and a guy ran the red light and hit them offset center. My MIL was driving, there was a friend in the passenger side, and a friend in the back seat. They were all wearing their seat belts. The ambulance took all three to the ER and they were there for a few hours. My MIL had X rays which came out fine. Her discharge orders say she has a concussion on her chest from the seat belt and a concussion on her hand from the airbag.

All three women were discharged from the ER this afternoon and are on heavy duty pain meds. I didn't see her friend in the front passenger side but I did see the one who was in the back. She has a HUGE welt on her neck and upper chest from the seat belt. It was very clear from her welt that the belt was too close on her neck, I wish I had gotten a picture of it. I would say she is about 5 foot 4. I REALLY don't like how the seat belts fit in the back of toyotas. I'm five foot 8 and the shoulder belt isn't right on me in the back of Brian's 2000 Camry and I've posted about how Jacob doesn't fit in my sienna and he is now 5 foot 2 and 130 lbs.

Here are some pictures.

There is no doubt in my mind that they were saved by the seat belts and airbags.

When you say "concussion"- do you mean "contusion"?

That's scary that the passenger's head hit the windshield, while seatbelted and with an airbag!

Okay, I'm glad I'm not the only one - that caught my attention.

Concussion is a brain injury.

Contusion is a fancy word for a bruise.

hum now I'm trying to remember what the discharge papers said, it might have been contusion. Sorry!

Now that I think about it we had assumed that the shattering of the window was from her friend's head but now I'm wondering if the airbag caused it. Any EMTs want to chime in?

They weren't going very fast when they were hit but the speed limit on the other road is 40 MPH. Obviously the front passenger took the brunt of it.

WOW! Glad that everyone is okay! Sounds like they are all very sore though. I ALWAYS put my seat belt on. It has been ingrained in me & it is just a habit to put it on.

Now as for the seat belt fitting properly, I am 5'4 so almost NO seat belt fits me right. However in my car my breasts act as a possitioner & put it in the proper place. LOL! I know that is funny, but it really does work for me in my car at least!

I am glad they are all living today, especially the front passenger as it looks like something went wrong when the impact occured :( It is just strange to me to see the windshield like that when the passenger was wearing a seatbelt. But then again maybe I am over-analyzing things and something like this can happen given the force of the accident. This is just another reason why Josef will not be in the front seat until he is driving.

I have no experince with Toyota's but in my Accord the lap belt cuts me across my stomach no matter what I do :(

Here's prayers for a fast recovery for all!

My dad lost control of his car a few months ago and hit a tree. He was wearing his seatbelt and the airbag deployed. His head hit the windshield HARD.
He has lost almost all of his memory from before the accident. He didn't know who his wife was, who i was, who his mom was, etc. I'm still getting to know him and he's still getting to know me since the accident. It's like starting all over again. ...

It's so scary how you can do everything 'right' and still have things like that happen.

I'm glad that everyone is okay in your situation!!

Here are pics of my dad's recent car crash..where his head hit the windshield just like your mil's friend ..

Wow, I'm glad everyone is okay!

I'm 5'7" with a fairly long torso, and none of the seatbelts in the back seat of my '06 Explorer fit me right. I can use the guide thing outboard, but the center fit is bad and can't be altered.

Wow, glad they're mostly ok. Are you sure it's her head that hit the windshield, not the airbag? Our windshiled looked like that after the airbag deployed....and I know it wasn't my head (this was 10+yrs ago).

Wow, those are some scary post accident pictures. Glad everyone is ok.

I'm guessing that was the airbag that did that ;)

Scary!! Glad everyone is OK though....

So, your head really hits the windshield even though you are wearing your seat belt and the airbags deploy??

IIRC, the windshield is the airbags 'backboard.' This is why it's important to make sure that if you ever need your windshield replaced that it be done correctly. The windshield is an important factor when it comes to the airbag deployment. If the windshield is not there to help support the airbag when it goes off for that split second, then the person in the passenger seat may end up hitting the windshield :(

OP, do you happen to know if that car had it's windshield ever replaced? I am just wondering if a broken windshield like that is common with an airbag goes off.

99% of the time shattered windshields are from airbags. They come out with a lot of force and the only thing there for them to hit is the windshield :) You can see it's directly where the airbag would have impacted. A head would cause the "spidering" of the windshield higher up like the other posters picture.

I've never seen a belted person hit a windshield (but plenty of non belted!) I'm sure it happens but it's rare (i feel so bad for the one posters dad! How awful!). I have to say on most accidents where airbags deployed there is spidering of the windshield. Usually if it's their head theres blood and tissue in the windshield as well

Glad they are all ok though!
